Faith
When you are kneeling
And praying
And you don't believe,
That is faith.
"And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto Thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit...
He answereth him...'bring him unto me.'
And they brought him unto Him: and when He saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.
And He asked his father,
'How long is it ago since this came unto him?'
And he said,
'Of a child...If Thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.'
Jesus said unto him,
'If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.'
And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears,
'Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief.'"
--St. Mark 9:17-24

There is no steady unretracing progress in this life; we do not advance through fixed graduations, and at the last one pause: through infancy's unconscious spell, boyhood's thoughtless faith, adolescence' doubt (the common doom), then skepticism, then disbelief, resting at last in manhood's pondering repose of If. But once gone through, we trace the round again; and are infants, boys, and men, and Ifs eternally. Where lies the final harbor, whence we unmoor no more?
--Herman Melville, Moby Dick
I believe; help thou my unbelief.

Wow. Time to go read Moby Dick. Herman Melville's quote is perfect commentary on this often cited scripture. I believe that this scripture describes how we must regain faith from "adolescence's doubt(the common doom), then skepticism, then disbelief." We study, learn of Christ, seek Him actively, offer Him our imperfect faith, and humbly recieve his mercy and strength where we are weak. Revealed truth, available only through the power of faith and the spirit is where we find the final harbor from whence we unmoor no more.
